On the other hand, in 1869 public executions were abolished due to pickpocketing and a carnival like atmosphere (effects of increased population) and no longer acted as a deterrent. The private executions are more retribution than a deterrence.

Both punishments were quite gory and bloody. In 1350c they used lots of torturing techniques as well as the threat of being hung drawn and quartered and up until the 1823 Judgement of Death Act the bloody code had over 220 crimes worthy of the death

conclusion
Lots of things had stayed the same between the 2 periods (like the mistreatment of prisoners and high amounts of hanging) but, despite this there was a lot of change like the aim of prisons and public executions. Overall leading to a moderate change.
