What happened to political parties after 1846?
They split into five groups, Peelites, Radicals, Whigs, Protectionist Conservatives and Irish MPs.

The Whigs.

What were the Peelites unsure about?
Whether to join the Whigs or the Conservatives.

Who was PM from 1846-52?
Lord John Russell a Whig, survived with support from the Peelites and Whigs. Furthered free trade by abolishing the Navigation Acts (1849).

Russell legizlation?
1847, Factory Act-John Fielden wanted to pass a bill that limited women and children's working hours to 10 hours. Richard Oastler organized a demonstration and the bill was passed.

Why was the Factory Act passed?
Some people were angry at manufactures over the repeal of the corn laws and in 1848 there was an economic depression so factories were open for 10 hours-this undermined the argument that a 10 hour day would force people out of business.

What was the public Health Act?
General Health Board set up in London with three members, Local boards of health were set up in places where the death rate was above 30%. The act was permissive and few boards of health were set up.

Problems with the Public Health Act?
Was permissive so few boards set up. When cholera epidemic ended the board was dismissed.

What was the abolition of the Navigation Acts?
Goods could be shipped on non British ships.

1850 Factory Act?
Lord Ashley campaigned for further factory reform because of the failure of the first one. The act limited the time factories could remain open and the working hours of women and children were increased to 10 half hours.

1850 Factory Act?
Factories closed at 2pm on Saturdays and women and children worked 7 and a half hours.

Who was PM from 1852?
Lord Derby a Conservative and a minority government. Ministry known as the who? who? ministry as the ministers were unknown, only lasted a few months.
