the king was a landowner and granted land to tenants in chief, if the chief died without and heir, the land became the Kings. if the heir was a minor, the king could inherit land as wardship and when they came of age they would pay to recover land

all tenants in chief were expected to pay an aid to the king on the knighting of the eldest son, annual income rose from 350 to 6,000 in 20 years

henry first used the exechequer system but only received 11,700 in the first year, needed money for his coronation and marriage and northern rebellion, he therefore switched to the chamber system as he was in charge of it himself
