- Henry is still young at this point and yearns for war, glory and looks to influences like Henry V and Arthurian Legends for inspiration

England invades France but is used as a diversion by Ferdinand for his own ends.
After initially failures, Tournai captured and garrisoned at great cost.

In Henry's absence, James IV of Scotland invades England but is killed at the Battle of Flodden, thus removing Scottish threat for decades

Lavish meeting with Francis I outside Calais, huge expense as Habsburg - Valois tensions rise

Wolsey agrees joint invasion of France with Charles V

Charles defeats Francis I and so controls Northern Italy and takes Francis prisoner. Charles becomes less friendly, so English policy becomes pro-French

Anti- Habsburg league arranged and funded by England

1527 Imperial sack of Rome
Charles takes Pope prisoner, thus making divorce from Katherine of Aragon impossible

England and France declare war on Charles but no army mobilised

Peace of Cambrai between Spain, France and the Pope gives Charles control of Northern Italy.
England left isolated and ends any chance of divorce from Catherine

- Henry left isolated ( Charles, Francis, Pope allied)
Vast sums of money had been spent on wars but no territory gained
- Divorce from Katherine was impossible
- England more active in Foreign Affairs than under Henry VII
