Glycogen (polysaccharides)

?
Where so you find glycogen?
Animal cells
1 of 5
What is the monomer of glycogen?
Alpha glucose
2 of 5
The structure of glycogen:
More highly branched than starch.
3 of 5
Structure in relation to function
-It is an energy store

-It's insoluble= no effect on water potential, so water doesn't enter the cell via osmosis.

-Large= doesn't diffuse out of cell.

-Compact= lots stored in small space.

- Highly branched= more ends for enzymes to act on simultaneo
4 of 5
How does the structure of glycogen relate to the metabolic rate of animals?
It is highly branched, increasing the rate that enzymes can break it down into glucose which is used in respiration.

Animals have a high metabolic rate, so carry out more respiration than plants.
