how are glaciers shaped
there are processes of erosion, weathering, transportation and deposition, creating distinct landforms.
1 of 12
what are the two types of erosion
abrasion and plucking
2 of 12
what is abrasion
it is when the glacier moves downhill and rocks that have been frozen into the base and sides of the glacier scrape the rock beneath.
3 of 12
what is plucking
it is when rocks become frozen into the bottom and sides of the glacier. As the glacier moves downhill it 'plucks' the rocks frozen into the glacier from the ground.
4 of 12
what is freeze thaw weathering
Freeze-thaw weathering is a process of erosion that happens in cold areas where ice forms. A crack in a rock can fill with water which then freezes as the temperature drops. The water freezes again as the temperature falls, and the expansion of the ice ca

what is a corrie
A corrie is a horseshoe-shaped valley which is formed through erosion by ice or glaciers.
6 of 12
what is a pyramidal peak
if three or more corries erode back towards each other, at the top of a mountain a pointed peak is left behind
7 of 12
what is an arete
this is a narrow ridge of land that is created when two corries erode back towards each other
8 of 12
what is lateral moraine
it is where the material deposited along both sides of the glacier.
9 of 12
what is medial moraine
it is where material deposited in the middle of the glacier.
10 of 12
what is terminal moraine
it is where material deposited at the end of the glacier.
11 of 12
what is a erratic
these are rocks that have been deposited by the glacier.
