What is a magnetic field?
It is a region where magnetic materials or a current carrying wire experience a force acting on them
1 of 8
What is the shape of the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying wire?
Concentric circles with the current at the centre
2 of 8
What method can you use to find out the direction of the magnetic field?
Right-hand thumb method (clench fist with the thumb pointing in the direction of the current and the fingers curl in the direction of the field
3 of 8
Does a rectangular coil reinforce or weaken the magnetic field?
Reinforces it
4 of 8
Why does this happen?
Because the magnetic fields on each side of the coil reinforce each other at the centre
5 of 8
What is a Solenoid?
A coil of wire
6 of 8
How can you increase the strength of the magnetic field?
By increasing the number of turns or by adding a magnetically soft iron core through the middle of the coil
7 of 8
Describe the magnetic field of a Solenoid
Inside the coil it is straight and regular and outside it is the same as a bar magnet with each end of the coil acting like N and S poles
