Test and result for primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols...
Add acidified potassium dichromate (VI) solution. Warm mixture. Primary and Secondary turn green. Tertiary stays orange.

An aldehyde --> carboxylic acid

no reaction.

Benedict's Test- what does it test for?
Aldehydes. Add Fehlings A and B together. Add NaCO3, anti bumping granules and ethanal. Warm solution. Result: dark blue--> red.

Tollen's Reagent- what does it test for?
Aldehydes. Add NaOH to 2cm3 AgNO3. Add dilute ammonia to dissolve. Heat and add the test solution. a silver mirror will be produced if present.

Testing for Carboxylic acids...
Add solid NaCO3 to solution. If it fizzes, bubble gas through limewater- should go cloudy.

Testing for alkenes...
Bromine Water- organge to colourless.
