Nuclear Family
A two generation family consiting of two parents and children

Any family larger than a nuclear family.

A family in which non-dependent children return home.

Lone parent family
A mother or father with their dependent child(ren) without a partner.

Reconstituted family
A family in which one or both partner has been married /cohabited before, and has a child/children creating step-relationships.

Beanpole family
A tall, narrow extended family often containing 4 generations.

Symmetrical family
A family in which conjugal roles are similar but not identical.
