social changes in 60's impacted the young. Education gave them freedom from adult responsibilities and enabled them to form counter culture. Failure of counter culture causes turn to world rejecting religion because it offered a more idealistic life

Response to modernity. Work was no longer providing meaning or identity so world affirming NRM provided these and promised success
