used to determine nature of stratigraphy. cultural - human action eg. buildings, graves, ditches etc

n transforms
used to determine nature of stratigraphy. natural - eg. earthquakes, subsidence, soil erosion, forest fire etc
2 of 10
TAQ & TPQ
TPQ - earliest possible date. eg. a coin dated 2010 couldn't be from earlier, in theory. TAQ - latest possible date eg. written dates
3 of 10
why is recording important?
excavation is very invasive - features & context destroyed, only find still exist unless other preserved. without context, finds are useless.
4 of 10
drawing and photos
drawing gives brings out details, defines important areas. photos show texture and overall image of site.
5 of 10
surveying techniques
baseline set on site for everything else to get taken off of. gps applied to OS grid.
6 of 10
underwater archaeology advantages
swim across site w/out damaging it, excavate by moving silt easily, water supports finds
7 of 10
underwater archaeology disadvantages
poor visibility when silt is disrupted, need extensive training, cold and risk of 'the bends' (can be solved w/ a decompression chamber or stopping at intervals)
8 of 10
underwater recce
sonar used - same principle as gpr but w/sound. v. sensitive equipment. affected by temperature of water and levels of salt.
9 of 10
preserving wood removed from anaerobic conditions
when dry, could crumble as the cellulose in the wood cells have been replaced with easily evaporated water. soak wood in P.E.G (polyethylene glycol) until it replaces water in cells. *case study* mary rose preserved in this way
