When research is publicised people are likely to take them as fact and policies may be based on them e.g. Bowlby's maternal deprivation studies, people won't detect flaws in methodology the way academics will

Scientific freedom
Science shouldn't be censored but there should be monitoring of sensitive research

Arguments for socially sensitive research
Psychologists have devised methods to resolve issues, it is hghly scrutinised, we can reduce prejudice, benefits society as with EWT, most research is still on white middle class americans but SSR readresses the balance + more aware of other cultures

Arguments against socially sensitive research
Flawed research has been used to dictate social policy and put certain groups at a disadvantage, used to discriminate e.g. sterilisation of people with low IQ in 1910's, the guidelines lack power and can't stop indefensible research being carried out
