Catalyst
Substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but doesnt get used up in the process. The catalyst will remain unchanged at the end of the reaction.

Catalyse reactions inside the cell.

Activation energy
The amount of energy required for a reaction to proceed.

Denaturation
Changes the tiertary structure of an enzyme so that it cannot function and so that its function cannot be restored. It does not change the primary structure of the enzyme or any protein.

Optimum pH
The pH value when the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction is at its maximum. Each enzyme has a specific optimum pH.

A limiting factor
A factor in a situation that, if all other conditions are kept constant, increasing the concentration of that factor alone will increase the reaction rate.

Enzyme inhibitor
Any substance or molecule that slows down the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction by affecting the enzyme in some way.

Cofactor
Any substance that has to be present so that an enzyme-controlled reaction can take place at an appropriate rate. Some cofactors are a part of the enzyme (prosthetic group). Others affect the enzyme on a temporary basis.

Biosensor
Uses enzyme-controlled reactions to detect presence of substances in a highly sensitive and specific way. If the substance is present, the enzyme-controlled reaction takes place. It has a mechanism for finding out whether product is made.
