What is the importance of tropical rainforest?
Provide resources-timber, fuel, medicines, foods. High biodiversity. Education, aesthetics, economic value.
1 of 9
What are the threats to the rainforest?
Unsustainable exploitation of resource. Forest removal to allow alternative land uses. Indirect threats from other activities.
2 of 9
What are some ways that the rainforest is being conserved?
Protected areas e.g. Rio Bravo. Trade controls- sustainability. Debt-for-nature swaps: conservation charity giving money to the bank to cancel some of the debt. The LEDC then protects rainforest with the money.
3 of 9
What is the importance of coral reefs?
Medicinal discoveries, fisheries, protection from erosion, climate control, tourism
4 of 9
What are threats to coral reefs?
Physical damage by swimmers, anchors etc. Souvenirs- CITES appendix 2. Sediments, carried by rivers. Climate change-coral bleaching (too warm). Pollution, fishing, disease
5 of 9
How are coral reefs being conserved?
National Parks e.g. Great Barrier Reef -Fixed mooring, education for divers etc. Sustainable development. Fishing Controls.
6 of 9
What is the importance of Antarctica?
Ice regulates sea levels by storing water on land. High albedo reduces heating of atmosphere.
7 of 9
What are the threats to Antarctica?
Global climate change (ice melt), ozone depletion plankton sensitive to UV, tourism- rising rapidly, diseases may spread, oil spills and disturb wildlife. Overfishing- threatens the species that feed on it
8 of 9
How is Antarctica being conserved?
Antarctic treaty 1959: antarctica only used for peaceful purposes, scientific research continues, nuclear explosions and waste disposal banned, conservation, impact of tourism managed
