What are waters main functions and processes?
Physiological solvent-chemical reactions, transport-blood and sap, temp control, anomalous expansion-ice floats on top of water so prevents water below from cooling, high specific heat capacity-cools and heats slowly
1 of 6
What other conditions make Earth appropriate for life?
Appropriate temperature range- most above 0 degrees, liquid water present. Suitable ambient gases- CO2: photosynthesis, nitrogen: protein synthesis. Light and radiation from sun-sunlight:energy for photosynthesis, heat production when absorbed
2 of 6
What conditions are the result of the Earths position in the solar system?
Distance from sun-light and temp, daily rotation-day and night, tilted axis-seasons, molten layers beneath crust-magnetic field, which deflects harmful radiation coming from Sun
3 of 6
How has oxygen changed the environment?
Its concentration declined as it reacted with other elements. A small amount was released by photolysis of water. Photosynthetic bacteria then plants released much more oxygen. Oxygen absorbed UV causing them to split (monatomic) then ozone developed
4 of 6
How has CO2 changed the environment?
CO2 is released by volcanoes. Retains heat allowing life to develop. living organisms have helped to sustain the temperatures by removing CO2 from atmosphere and storing it
5 of 6
How has the water cycle changed the environment?
Heat energy from sunlight causes evaporation. Transpiration by plants returns water vapour to the atmosphere so it can be blown further inland.
