1. Ethnicity; Gilbourn; teacher labelling-

indian and chinese people often come from proffesional background when afro carribbeans come from w/c
teachers saw blacks as a threat and labelled them, this led to confrontation and often blacks were excluded which leads to self fullfilling prophecy
the curriculum didnt feature blacks as most books and history were about DWM, blacks often shown as slaves and this leads to low exoectations

w/c have immediate gratification as they arent socialised into values of education where m/c are as they value education
low wages, poor diet and over crowded house leads to no recources, poor health and hard to study in w/c families
becker- w/c less ideal pupil, m/c more ideal ->hargreeves study- SES leads to SFP

boys are disruptive and dominate class to gain status from peers and friends, this leads to harsher disciplines
girls are socioalized with all the traits needed for school such as obidient, passive and punctual, nne oakley shows the difference between boys and girls through verbal appellation and cannalisation
girls see their parents spilt and girls see mum as head strong, independant that gives them motivation to work hard however boys lack father figure and turn to xbox

year 11 girls who were exposed to racism, didnt speak or ask for help as they saw teachers as racist and this led to their opportunities being blocked
girls who were exposed to racism channelled their anger into success and showed how labels can be rejected
street culture meant that failing was cool and a badge to wear, they would get hassle if they did well
