Disorders of sleep

Evaluation of Lin et al
Problems with generalisability and ethics (IDA)
1 of 6
Olivero
Found during normal sleep GABA produced and inhibits motor activity. In children this immature system is not fully controlling motor activity during sleep
2 of 6
Zadra et al
40 patients all suspected sleepwalkers - 15 reported injuries during Sleepwalking. Observed during sleep and sleepwalking. Normal night sleep = 50% signs of sleepwalking. After sleep deprivation = 90% sleepwalking

Evaluation of Zadra et al
High control = low ecological validity and lack of external variables. Small sample size = difficult to generalise. Biological determinism = people commit crimes given diminished responsibility
4 of 6
What does Zadra et al's study suggest?
Sleep deprivation does not sleep to sleepwalking in normal individuals and therefore appears to be characteristic of individuals who are genetically predisposed to sleepwalking
5 of 6
Lin et al
Identified a mutant gene in animals which was found to affect a receptor. Selectively bred dogs to have Narcolepsy. Mutation on chromosome 12 on gene responsible for regulation of Orexin, suggests Narcolepsy is genetic in dogs
