Criminological Psychology- Contemporary Study

?
What is the contemporary study?
Valentine & Mesout (2009)
1 of 13
What was their aim?
To investigate the effects of anxiety levels and the number of correct items recalled
2 of 13
What was their hypothesis?
There will be a correlation between anxiety levels and the number of correct descriptors recorded and also the number of correct identifications
3 of 13
Procedure
Volunteer sample entered London dungeons and a scary man jumped out on them, at the end the volunteers had to fill out a questionnaire
4 of 13
What did the questionnaire ask the participants to do?
1) Rate how anxious they were(SAI- self assessment indicator), 2) Describe the man and 3) Pick out the man from 9 photos
5 of 13
Name a precaution they made when counting the descriptors
They has 2 judges to decide whether the certain descriptors were correct to make it more reliable
6 of 13
What were the results?
The lower the anxiety score, the more correct descriptions made, Those with low anxiety scored around 21 for correct items compared to those with high anxiety who scored on average about 5
7 of 13
Conclusion
Anxiety levels show a clear effect on EWT accuracy
8 of 13
Generalisability
Volunteer sample, hard to generalise as it isnt representative, volunteers tend to only be one type of person
9 of 13
Reliability
It was fairly reliable as it was a field experiment however field has less control over extraneous variables, which could have affected the results, eg high anxiety looking somewhere else or being distracted
10 of 13
Application
It has relatively low application because there is little you can do about lowering the anxiety levels of an incident when it is reported after, however it can be taken into consideration when in court and not putting too much weight on the testomony
11 of 13
Validity
It has a higher ecological validity because it is a field experiment so it is a more natural setting, could have lower internal validity due to less control on variables,
12 of 13
Ethics
Little ethical implications because the participants were debriefed and also volunteered to go into the dungeons, knowing that things will jump out on them, however placing someone in a high anxiety state is deemed unethical
