Computing System Architecture

?
What is an Embedded System?
An embedded system is a computer system designed to perform specific tasks. They have a microcontroller as the main part which controls all the operations required through them. They are designed to run without human intervention.

Why are Embedding systems better than PC's?
Embedding systems are smart and more efficient increasing their day to day use. They are more accurate due to being designed to only perform a specific task and when a problem occurs you can isolate the sensor or actuator more easily.

Name some the differences between a PC and an Embedded System.
A PC system: KEYBOARD, MONITOR, PARALLEL PORT ( printer port ) AND SERIAL PORTS & USB. Embedded Systems: SENSORS, ACTUATORS ( valves and airbags) - MOTOR THAT CARRIES OUT A MOTION IN A SYSTEM.

What are ECU's ( Engine Control Units )?
They are small discrete computers that control almost evry major and minor system in a modern car.
4 of 12
Give some examples of Embedded Systems.
Calculators, Cameras, Robots, some components in a car, washing machine parts, dishwasher parts etc..
5 of 12
What is the CPU's job?
It is known as the ' brain of the computer ' and its job is to process data and by processing we mean things like searching, sorting, calculating and decison making.
6 of 12
Name the sole difference between an embedded system and a CPU.
An embedded systemm can only do one specific thing wheras a CPU controls and multitasks between everything.
7 of 12
What cycle does the CPU follow?
The Fetch-Decode-Execute cycle.
8 of 12
What happens at the Fetch stage in The Fetch-Execute cycle?
The CPU fetches some data and instructions from the RAM ( where instructions are temporarily stored in ' registers ').
9 of 12
What happens at the Decode stage?
The decode step is where the CPU works out what the data/ instructions mean.
10 of 12
What happens at the Execute stage?
The Execute stage is where data processing happens. Instructions are carried out on the data.
11 of 12
What is the speed of the CPU?
The speed of the CPU is measured in HERTZ and on average it carries on 3 billion instructions per second ( 3GHz ).
