What is Colour Constancy?
A process that allows the brain to recognize a familiar object as being a consistent color regardless of the amount or wavelengths of light reflecting from it at a given moment

Chromatic
Colours which have a hue (red, green, etc)

What does Hering's opponent-colour theory suggest and what stage of colour processing is it?
That there are four unique hues, which do not look like a mixture of other hues (red, green, blue and yellow) - this is stage two, in the ganglion cells
8 of 16
What does the trichromatic colour theory suggest and what stage of colour processing is it?
There are there basic types of light-sensitive cells in the retina, which respond best to different wavelenghts - this is stage one, in the cones
9 of 16
What are the two classes of photoreceptor?
Rods: work at low light levels
Cones: work in bright conditions
10 of 16
What are the three types of cone?
S: work at short wavelenghts
M: work at medium wavelenghts
L: work at long wavelenghts
11 of 16
What is the prinicipal of univariance?
A single cone type cannot distinguish between a change of wavenelght and a change in light intensity
12 of 16
What are the two opponent colour channels?
Red-green channel: L - M
Blue-yellow channel: S - (L + M)
13 of 16
What is the luminance (black-white) channel?
L + M
14 of 16
What are the types of colour blindness?
Protanopes: lack L cone
Deuteranopes: lack M cones
Tritanopes: lack S cones
15 of 16
What is the receptive field of a neuron?
The region of the retina which must be illuminated in order to obtain a response
