cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with applied relaxation as therapies for panic disorders
3 of 12
how many participants were there
38 DSM diagnosed, recruited through referrals 26F 12M

what was the design
independent. Random allocation to either groups - CBT or AR
5 of 12
describe the procedure
pre-treatment baseline assessment - used variety of questionnaires. Patients recorded in diary the date and situation of every panic attack. 12 weeks of treatment given of 50-60 mins with homework.

how was AR used/ applied to the patients
identify what caused the panic attacks. Training started with tension-release of muscles. Gradually increased by session. 8- rapid relaxation was used whilst practising this in stressful situations
7 of 12
how was CBT used//applied to the patients
identify the misinterpretation of body symptoms, generate alternative cognition in response. Prevent patients from feeling panicked. this was practised in situations where panic attacks were induced and patients were not allowed to avoid them
8 of 12
give an example of CBT and how it was used in the study
their heart raising was not a heart attack but a normal reaction to stress and it will slow down
9 of 12
what did the findings show
CBT showed 74% panic-free patients after, and 89% after 1 year. AR showed 65% afetr treatment, and 82% after 1 year
10 of 12
what conclusions can be drawn from the study
both CBT and AR worked at reducing panic attacks, although its difficult to rule out some cognitive chnages in the AR group
