what are the three main currents
longshore currents
rip currents
upwelling
2 of 5
explain longshore currents
-occur at an angle to shoreline
-flow of water runnning parallel to shoreline
- moves water along surf zone, transports sediment parallel to shore line.
3 of 5
explain rip currents
- stong currents moving away from shoreline
- develop when seawater is pilled up along coatline by incoming waves
- initally runs parallel to shoreline before flowing out through the breaker zone, possibly at headland where the coast changes direction.
4 of 5
explain upwelling
-movement of cold water from deep in the ocean towards teh surface.
-more dense cld water replaces the water surface and creates nutrient rich cold currents.
