Water and Carbon Cycle

?
What is a system?
It is comprised of any set of inter-related components that are connected together to form a working unit.
1 of 8
What is a closed system?
When there is a transfer of energy without any mass being transferred.
2 of 8
What is an example of a closed system?
Earth or artificially created closed environmental systems have been created e.g. The biosphere 2 project (Arizona, USA) and The biosphere 2 project (Krasnoyarsk, Russia).
3 of 8
What is an open system?
This is where a system receives both inputs and transfers outputs of energy or mass across the boundaries of the system.
4 of 8
What is an example of an open system?
Most naturally, the water and carbon cycle are open systems.
5 of 8
What are the characteristics of an open systems?
They have a structure that is designed by it's components, they function in the same way (involves inputs and outputs and/ or matter is processed causing the system to change in some way.
6 of 8
What are the stores (components)?
Where amounts of energy or matter is are held and not transferred
7 of 8
What are transfers and flows?
Is the movement of energy or matter through the system, which enables inputs to become outputs - these may involve processes that create change
