Coastal Landscapes - Glossary - 1/5

?
Wearing away of cliff by sand, framents of rock and boulders are hurled at cliff by waves. Causes grinding similar to sandpaper.
Abrasion Corrasion
1 of 15
Coastal management stragety to move defence of area seawards from its initial position. Rarely put into action.
Advance the line
2 of 15
Without Oxygen.
Anoxic
3 of 15
Gives Special Protection to particularly attractive landscapes.
Area of Outstanding National Beauty
4 of 15
Wave washing straight down beach due to gravity.
Backwash
5 of 15
Accumulation of sand and shingle lying parallel to shoreline that encloses marsh/lagoon on seaward side.
Barrier Beach
6 of 15
Unsorted sediment deposited directly beneath glacier, which has range of particle sizes from fine clay to rock fragments and boulders.
Boulder Clay
7 of 15
Part of land most affected by its promixity to sea and that part of the ocean most affected by proximity of the land. Zone of transition which is the frontier between sea and land.
Coast
8 of 15
Long wavelength and low wave height. stronger swash than backwash. Low frequency and higher wave profile. Beach has low gradient profile.
Constructive Waves
9 of 15
Erosional waves. Backwash is stronger than swash. high frequency and low wave profile. Beach gradient is steep. High height and short wavelength.
Destructive Waves
10 of 15
any process where land can be substantially improved or made available for some use. Processes include the treatment of derelict land, drainage of temporarily waterlogged land or the drainage of lakes or shallow parts of the sea floor.
Land reclamation
11 of 15
the rock’s features such as its permeability, solubility, relative hardness and texture.
Lithology
12 of 15
the movement of sand and shingle along the coast
Longshore Drift
13 of 15
the lowest point that is exposed to the air at low tide
Low water mark
14 of 15
reaches out to the outer limit of the economic exclusion zone (EEZ). This is currently set at 200 miles or 370.4km out to sea. Within that limit the coastal state has rights over the natural resources of the water as well as the sea bed.
