What is taxonomy?
Taxonomy is the study of classification.

What 8 groups are in taxonomic heirachy?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
3 of 19
What is the first part of the binomial naming system?
Genus
4 of 19
What is the second part of the binomial naming system?
species
5 of 19
What is phylogeny?
Phylogeny is the study of the evolutionary history of groups of organisms
6 of 19
What does phylogeny tell us?
Phylogeny tells us who’s related to whom and how closely related they are

What are the 5 kingdoms?
prokaryotae, protoctista, fungi, plantae, animalia
8 of 19
What is an example of prokaryotae?
bacteria
9 of 19
what is an example of protoctista?
algae
10 of 19
What are some features of prokaryotae?
prokaryotic, unicellular (single-celled),
no nucleus, less than 5 µm
11 of 19
What are some features of protoctista?
eukaryotic cells, usually live in water, single-celled
or simple multicellular organism
12 of 19
What are some features of fungi?
eukaryotic, chitin cell wall, saprotrophic (absorb
substances from dead or decaying organisms),
single-celled or multicellular organisms
13 of 19
What does saprotrophic mean?
organism that absorbs
substances from dead or decaying organisms
14 of 19
What are some features of plantae?
eukaryotic, multicellular, cell walls made of cellulose, can photosynthesise, contain chlorophyll, autotrophic (produce their own food)
15 of 19
What does autotrophic mean?
an organism that produces their own food
16 of 19
What are some features of animalia?
eukaryotic, multicellular, no cell walls,
heterotrophic (consume plants and animals)
17 of 19
What does heterotrophic mean?
consumes both plants and animals
18 of 19
What 4 key observations did Darwin make?
-Organisms produce more offspring than survive.
-variation exists in the characteristics of members of the same species.
-Some of these characteristics can be passed on from one generation to the next.
-Individuals that are best adapted to their environme
