Ut is slightly soluble in water so it dissolves into drinks under pressure and gives the drink a fizz. The solution is slightly acidic due to the carbonic acid formed.

Why can carbon dioxide be used in fire extinguishers?
The carbon dioxide is more dense than air, so it 'sinks' onto the flames and stops the oxygen reaching/fueling the fire. They are useful in electrical fires where water is not appropriate.

Why does carbon dioxide cause global warming?
The carbon dioxide can absorb the infrared radiation emitted from the sun. Therefore the radiation is 'trapped within the earth, and causes it to warm slightly

What are two causes of global warming?
Deforestation, burning fossil fuels.

What are the flame test colours for Lithium, sodium, potassium and Calcium.
Larry ate a red cake, Sarah bit a yam, Peter scoffed some liver, Cathryn had real bran.
7 of 15
How would you carry out the flame test?
Using a clean platinum loop dipped in HCl

How would you test for Copper II ions, and what would the result be?
Add sodium hydroxide solution, will produce a blue precipitate due to the Cu(OH)2 (s)
9 of 15
How would you test for Iron II ions, and what would the result be?
Add sodium hydroxide solution, will produce a sludgy green precipitate due to the Fe(OH)2 (s.)

How would you test for Iron III ions, and what would the result be?
Add sodium hydroxide solution, will produce a reddish brown precipitate due to the Fe(OH)3 (s)

How can you test for NH4 + ions?
You add sodium hydroxide to the solution being tested, and ammonia gas will be given off. You can test for ammonia gas with a piece of damp red litmus paper turning blue.

How would you test for carbonates?
You add HCl and they will give off CO2.
13 of 15
How would you test for sulfates?
You would add barium chloride and HCl. A white precipitate would form.

How would you test or hallides, and what would the result be?
Ut is slightly soluble in water so it dissolves into drinks under pressure and gives the drink a fizz. The solution is slightly acidic due to the carbonic acid formed.
