The rate of reaction depends on five things;
1) Temperature 2) Concentration 3) Surface are of a solid 4) Pressure 5) Catalyst
1 of 12
The rate of reaction can be calculated by the following formula:
Rate of reaction=amount of reactant used or amount of product formed/Time
2 of 12
Three different ways to measure the rate of reaction:
1) Precipitation 2) Change in mass 3) The volume of gas given off
3 of 12
More collisions increases the rate of reaction.
The effect of temperature, concentration and surface area on the rate of reaction can be explained in terms of how often the reacting particles collide successfully.
4 of 12
Higher temperature increases collisions.
When the temperature is increased the particles all move quicker. if they're moving quicker, they're going to collide more often.
5 of 12
Higher concentration increases collisions.
If a solution is made more concentrated it means there are more particles of reactant knocking about between the water molecuels which makes collisions between the important particle more likely.
6 of 12
Pressure increases collisions.
In a gas, increasing the pressure means that the particles are more compressed so there will be more frequent collisions.
7 of 12
Large surface area increases collisions
If oone of the reactants is a solid then breaking it up into smaller pieces will increase the total surface area. This means the particles around in the solution will have more to work on, so there will be more collisions.
8 of 12
Increasing the temperature causes faster collisions.
Reactions only happen if the particles have enough energy. The minimum amount of energy needed by the particles to react is called ACTIVATION ENERGY. At a high temp there will be more particles colliding with enough energy to make a reaction happen.
9 of 12
Catalyst definition:
A catalyst is a substance which speed up a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction.
10 of 12
Advantages of Catalysts in industry.
1)commercial reasons 2)catalysts increase the rate of reaction-saving money as they dont need to operate for as long. 3)Catalysts work at lower temperatures-good for sustainable development.
11 of 12
Disadvantages of using Catalysts.
1)Expensive to buy and often need to be removed from the product and cleaned 2)Different reactions use different reactions 3) catalysts can be poisoned by impurities.
