Draw and label Earth's structure
Inner core -solid (iron&nickel) , outer core -liquid (iron&nickel) , mantle -semi liquid, lithosphere (tectonic plates) - crust and outer layer of mantle, crust -solid
1 of 11
What are the problems associated with studying Earth's structure ?
The crust is too thick to drill through. Can only be studied by earthquakes or man-made explosions.
2 of 11
Why do the tectonic plates move?
The radioactive decay inside the mantle creates a transfer of energy. This energy forms convection currents inside the mantle thus making the tectonic plates move.
3 of 11
What is subduction?
Subduction is when the dense oceanic plate collides with the less dense continental plate. Due to different densities, the dense oceanic plate will be forced underneath the continental plate. This causes the oceanic plate to be partly remelted.
4 of 11
What is the Wegner's continental drift theory?
That millions of years ago , there was one supercontinent called Pangea. Over time it started braking into smaller continents which began drifting apart and still are.
5 of 11
Why did it take so long for the theory to be accepted?
Because Wegner couldn't explain how the continents moved. However in 1960's there was enough evidence to fully support his thoery.

What is Basalt ?
Iron-rich rock formed from runny lava.
7 of 11
What is Rhyolite?
Silica-rich rock formed from viscous lava.
8 of 11
Why are volcanoes studied?
To predict future eruptions and study Earth's structure.
9 of 11
Name 3 different types of rock and how they're formed. Give examples
Sedimentary rock is formed from layers of sediment under the sea, pressed down by pressure - limestone. Metamorphic rock is formed when heat and pressure act on sedimentary rock -marble. Igneous rock is formed from cooled lava - granite
10 of 11
Give the word and symbol equation for decomposition of Limestone.
Calcium carbonate> calcium oxide + carbon dioxide. CaCO3 > CaO + CO2
