Chemistry - Unit 2

?
Name all the structures of the Earth.
Crust - Mantle - Outer core - Inner Core
1 of 14
A plate carrying a continent is called?
A Continental plate.
2 of 14
A plate carrying an ocean is called?
An Oceanic plate.
3 of 14
How do we know about the structures of the Earth.
They're known because of the way shockwaves from earthquakes travel through it. These waves are detected using seismographs.
4 of 14
What is the outer layer of the Earth called and what's it from?
The Lithosphere and it's made from the crust and upper most mantle.
5 of 14
Plates move by what?
Convection currents.
6 of 14
Where are volcanoes/earthquakes most commonly found?
Plate boundaries.
7 of 14
What is subduction?
Subduction is when two plates collide, the more denser plate (oceanic) sinks below the less denser plate (continental).
8 of 14
What is meant by incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion occurs when there isn't enough supply of oxygen.
9 of 14
What gases are produced when incomplete combustion occurs?
Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide.
10 of 14
What is combustion?
Combustion is a rapid reaction between a fuel and oxygen that releases energy.
11 of 14
What is an exothermic reaction?
Reaction which releases energy into the air. The surrounding temperature raises during this reaction.
12 of 14
What is an endothermic reaction?
Reactions which absorb energy from the surrounding area. The temperature falls during this reaction.
13 of 14
Mortar is made from what?
Mortar is made from cement, water and sand.
