Core Chemistry: Materials from the Earth: Name the three main types of rock
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
1 of 9
Sedimentary rocks may contain fossils, true or false
True
2 of 9
Name one type of metamorphic rock and state its origins
Marble, it originates from limestone
3 of 9
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been subject to a tremendous amount of heat and pressure. This has caused them to change into a metamorphic rock.
4 of 9
Name 3 types of sedimentary rock
Limestone, chalk, sandstone
5 of 9
How is igneous rock formed?
Formed when magma cools. If magma is cooled inside the earth then the rock is intrusive, larger crystals are formed. When magma is cooled extrusively it cools faster so has smaller crystals.
6 of 9
How are sedimentary rocks formed.
Sediments are deposited into lakes or oceans by a river or stream. These build up layers at the bottom and this causes them to become squashed. Water squeezed our, crystals form. Crystals form glue like, cementation. Eventually form sediment rocks.
7 of 9
Which type of igneous forms deep underground
Intrusive
8 of 9
Which type of igneous rock forms on the surface
Extrusive
