Chemistry C1 5.3 New and useful polymers.

?
What are materials scientists able to do?
Design new polymers to make materials with special properties for particular uses. New polymers are being developed all the time.
1 of 9
What are some of the uses are new polymers designed for?
Packaging, clothing and medical applications.
2 of 9
Why have new polymer materials for dental fillings been developed?
To replace fillings that contain mercury.
3 of 9
What are light-sensitive polymers used in?
Sticking plasters to cover wounds so the plasters can be easily removed.
4 of 9
What are hydrogels?
Polymers that can trap water and have many uses including dressings for wounds.
5 of 9
What are shape-memory polymers?
Polymers that change back to their original shape when temperature or other conditions are changed.
6 of 9
What is a example of a shape-memory polymer and what is the term used for this type of polymer?
There is a polymer material used for stitching wounds that changes shape when heated to body temperature, this type of polymer is known as a smart polymer.
7 of 9
Why would polymers be used to coat the fibres used to make fabrics?
To make them waterproof and breathable.
8 of 9
What can the plastic used to make many drinks bottles be recycled to make?
Polyester fibres for clothing as well as filling pillows and duvets. We are now recycling more plastics and finding new uses for them.
