Chemistry C1 5.2 Making polymers from alkenes.

?
What are plastics made of?
Polymers.
1 of 14
What are polymers?
Polymers are large molecules made when many small molecules (monomers) join together.
2 of 14
What can alkenes be used to make?
Polymers such as poly(ethene) and poly(propene).
3 of 14
How do the bonds in the monomer change in the polymer?
Double bonds in the monomer become single bonds in the polymer when the molecules have joined together.
4 of 14
What are plastics made of very large molecules called?
Polymers.
5 of 14
What are the small molecules used to make polymers called?
Monomers.
6 of 14
What is the reaction to make a polymer called?
Polymerisation.
7 of 14
What can lots of ethene (C_(2)H_(4)) molecules join together to form?
Poly(ethene), commonly known as polythene.
8 of 14
What happens in the reaction of ethene to poly(ethene)?
In the polymerisation reaction the double bond in each ethene molecule becomes a single bond and thousands of ethene molecules join together in long chains.
9 of 14
What everyday items are made from alkenes?
Many of the plastics we use as bags, bottles, containers and toys.
10 of 14
How are polymers made?
From many small molecules or monomers that react or join together or polymerise to make a very large or long molecule.
11 of 14
How many monomers are there in a poly(ethene) molecule?
Thousands or a very large number.
12 of 14
Why can we make polymers from alkenes but not from alkanes?
Alkenes are more reactive, unsaturated and have a double bond whereas alkanes are unreactive, saturated and do not have a double bond.
