(Chapter 4) Chemical Changes

Includes Required Practical 1 and Required Practical 2. There is also a matching set of revision cards that go along side these cue cards.

?
What is oxidation?
A reaction where a substance gains oxygen and/or loses electrons
1 of 24
What is reduction?
A reaction where a substance loses oxygen and/or gains electrons
2 of 24
What do metals more reative than hydrogen do?
Metals more reactive than hydrogen react with dilute acids to form a salt and hydrogen. (Metal + Acid -> Metal Salt + Hydrogen)
3 of 24
What is a displacement reaction?
A reaction where a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound.
4 of 24
What hapens to metal atoms when they react?
They lose electrons to form positive ions
5 of 24
(Req. Prac. 1) What is the reaction used for making salts in this practical?
Sulfuric Acid + Copper Oxide -> Copper Sulfate H2SO4 + CuO -> CuSO4 +H2O
6 of 24
(Req. Prac. 1) What is formed?
Hydrated blue crystals
7 of 24
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction where both reduction and oxidation take place.
8 of 24
What is an ore?
A rock from which a metal can be extracted or profit.
9 of 24
What are acids?
Solutions with a pH less than 7; produces H+ ions in water.
10 of 24
What is meant by aqueous?
Dissolved in water (represented in equations by (aq))
11 of 24
What is an alkali?
A solution wiht a pH more than 7; produces OH- ions in water
12 of 24
What is the pH scale?
A measure of how acidic/alkaline a solution is. Neutral solutions are a 7, strong alkalis are nearer 14 and strong acids are nearer 0.
13 of 24
What is a strong acid? A weak acid?
Acid in which all the molecules break into ions in water. A weak acid is a n acid in which only a small fraction of the molecules break into ions in water.
14 of 24
What is the reaction of acids with metal hydroxides?
Metal hydroxide + Acid -> Metal Salt + Water
15 of 24
What is the reaction of acids with metal oxides?
Metal Oxide + Acid -> Metal Salt + Water
16 of 24
What is the reaction of acids with metal carbonates?
Maetal carbonate + Acid -> Metal Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
17 of 24
What is neutralisation?
A reaction that uses up some or all of the H+ ions from an acid.
18 of 24
What is a salt?
Substances made when acids react with metals, metal hydroxides, metal oxides and metal carbonates.
19 of 24
What is electrolysis? What are electrolytes?
Electrolysis s the decomposition of ionic compouds using electricity. Electrolytes are liquids the condct electricity.
20 of 24
What is a discharge?
To gain or lose electrons to become electrically neutral.
21 of 24
What is an anode? Cathode?
Anode- An electrode where oxidation takes place. Cathode- " reduction takes place
22 of 24
What is OIL RIG an acronym for?
Oxidation Is Loss Reduction is Gain
