What is a community?
All biotic components in a naturally occurring region.

What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of organisms along with their physical surroundings.

What is the biosphere?
The biosphere is the largest ecosystem that encompasses the entire planet.

What is geographic distribution?
it's when we map all the places a species can be found.

What is a habitat?
The habitat is the place where an organism lives. E.g. the habitat of a water lily is a pond.

What is a microhabitat?
a microhabitat is a smaller habitat within a habitat. E.g. a fallen log covered with moss that is home to insects and fungi.

What is a niche?
a niche is a part of an environment in which the species survives, reproduces and is likely to persist.

What are the three main types of ecosystems?
Freshwater, marine and terrestrial.

Terrestrial ecosystems can be named by the type of plants rather than a dominant species. What are the two key features that they use?
First is the type of plant that forms the tallest/dominant layer in the community. Second is the cover of the canopy, estimated according to the amount of sunlight blocked out.

What are biomes?
Biomes are ecosystems that are studied on a world-wide scale.

What is a quadrat?
A quadrat is a tool that is used to take a sample population of the community.

What is a transect?
a transect is a line which quadrats can be located to sample and describe an ecosystem.
