CH2 Revision (Analytical techniques)

This is the final topic on WJEC Chemistry. These flashcards should provide the basic information required in this topic. This cover Mass spectrometry and Infrared spectroscopy.

?
What is Fragmentation?
The splitting of molecules in a mass spectrometer into smaller parts.
1 of 5
What is the largest peak on a mass spectrum graph?
This is the molecular ion (positive ion formed in mass spectrometer) and provides the Mr.
2 of 5
Chlorine and Bromine peaks on a mass spectrum graph?
There will be two peaks for each halogen as both halogens can exist as two isotopes. There will therefore be two Mr's and molecular ions for each halogen.
3 of 5
What is meant by characteristic absorption?
This is the wavenumber range at which a particular bond absorbs radiation.
4 of 5
Where to look on a Infrared spectroscopy graph?
Only look at the main peaks, these will give you the basic bonds in the molecule.
