Cells AQA AS Biology: TEST ON ALL 6 TOPICS

This a quick-fire test on all 6 topics that I have wrote about based on the AQA specification:

  • Structure of eukaryotic cells
  • Structure of prokaryotic cells and viruses
  • Methods of studying cells
  • All cells arise from other cells
  • Transport across cell membranes
  • Cell recognition and the immune system
?
Define the term antigen
An antigen is a protein that triggeres an immune response
1 of 14
What is osmosis?
Movement of water from a high water potential to a low water potential through a semi-permeable membrane
2 of 14
During homogenisation, why are the organelles put into an ice-cold isotonic buffer solution?
The solution is ice-cold to prevent enzyme activity. It is isotonic which prevents shrivelling and bursting of organelles by osmosis and is a buffe which prevents changes to the pH which could make the enzymes and the organelles denature
3 of 14
What is the equation for the mitotic index?
(n/N) x 100 (anything similar will do)
4 of 14
Why does the nucleus have pores?
To exchange substances between the nucleus and the cytoplasm
5 of 14
Whyis the rough endoplasmic reticulum known as 'rough'.
It has ribosomes on its cisternae

Ultracentrifugation forms pellets of the heaviest organelles in the soultion. What name is used for the lighter organeeles above the pellet?
Supernatant
7 of 14
What name is given to the process of viral DNA being made on a template of viral RNA? Name the enzyme that is involved
Reverse transcription and the enzyme is reverse transcriptase
8 of 14
What process do bacterial cells follow when they divide? What is formed when the bacterial cells need to divide into two?
Binary fission and a cross septum is formed when they need to divide into two.
9 of 14
What can uncontrolled cell divisin lead to?
Cancer/Tumour cells
10 of 14
What happens during anaphase of mitosis?
Centromeres divide when spindle fibres contract to opposite poles of the cell. Nuclear membrane reforms and spindle disintegrates.
11 of 14
What is the space between the inner mebrane and outer membrane called of the mitochondria?
Inter-membrane space
12 of 14
What equation would you use if you wanted to work out magnification?
I = A x M (or anything similar)
13 of 14
Define the term antibody
An anitbody is a protein that forms antigen-antibody complexes when joined to a complementary antigen
