How can you test for alkenes?
By adding the substance to bromine water, the alkene will decolourise the bromine water to change from orange to colourless as the double bond has opened up and formed bonds with the bromine.

Ethene can be hydrated with steam in the presence of a catalyst to make ethanol.

What is hydrogenation?
Unsaturated vegetable oils hardened by reacting them with hydrogen in presence of a nickel catalyst at 60 degrees–this is hydrogenation as hydrogen reacts with double-bonded carbons so opens out double bonds. This makes a lot of trans fats-unhealthy.

What are the advantages of plastic bags made from polyethene?
Strong/low density/water resistant. Bags can be reused. Money charged for bags go to good causes (encourage reuse). Bags can be recycled (into milk bottle crates). Bags burnt to provide heat for buildings/electricity. New bags are now biodegradable.

What are the disadvantages of plastic bags made from polyethene?
Long time to biodegrade. Shortage of landfill space. Made from crude oil-non-renewable. Lots of energy used producing poly(ethene). Producing poly(ethene) and burning release CO2/causes global warming. Litter-visual pollution, effects wildlife.

Why did the percentage of carbon dioxide decrease in the Earth's early atmosphere?
Carbon dioxide dissolves in water/oceans. Marine organisms use (dissolved) carbon dioxide to form their shells/skeletons. Plants / algae photosynthesise/ absorb/use carbon dioxide.
