What is Fractional distillation?
Crude oil is made up of different compounds called hydrocarbons that can be separated because they have different boiling points.
1 of 21
How do intermolecular forces affect Fractional Distillation?
The higher the boiling point of a hydrocarbon the stronger the intermolecular bonds and the more energy is needed to break the bonds.
2 of 21
What are the products of Fractional Distillation?? (from highest temp to lowest)
LPG, Petrol, Paraffin, Diesel, Heating Oil, Fuel Oil and Bitumen
3 of 21
What is cracking?
The breaking down of a long chain of hydrocarbons into smaller ones (e.g Ocatane=> Hexane + Ethene)
4 of 21
What is the equation for Complete and Incomplete combustion?
Complete= Hydrocarban+oxegen => CO2 + water Incomplete= Hydrocarbon + oxygen => Carbon Monoxide + carbon + water
5 of 21
What is lime water a test for?
CO2
6 of 21
What colour does cobalt chloride turn in the presence of water?
Pink
7 of 21
What does the air contain?
Nitrogen (78%) Oxygen (21%) CO2 (0.035%) And other
8 of 21
How do plants help the environment?
The photosynthesise which reduces CO2 and produces Oxegen
9 of 21
What is the difference between Alkanes and Alkenes?
Alkanes have a single covalent bond (saturated) and Alkenes have a double covalent bond (un-saturated)
10 of 21
How do you test for a saturated or unsaturated molecule?
Bromine water turns clear in the presence of a unsaturated molecule
11 of 21
What are the conditions needed for polymerisation?
A high temperature and a catalyst
12 of 21
what is the problem with polymers?
Difficult to get rid of as non-biodegradable because they are so unreactive.
13 of 21
Why is cooking an irreversible process?
When you cook meat and eggs the proteins in them de-nature
14 of 21
What is an emulsifier?
stops oil and water from seperating
15 of 21
What are esters?
esters are compounds with pleasant smells. (used in perfumes) Can be found naturally or made in a lab
16 of 21
What is a solvent and a solution?
A solvent is the substance that something is dissolved into and the solute is the thing that being disolved
17 of 21
What do you need to make a paint?
Pigment (substance that gives colour) binding medium (sticks the paint to surfaces) solvent (thins the paint)
18 of 21
What is a emulsion paint and an oil paint?
A paint that is water-based. The ingredients for the paint are dissolved in water and an oil paint is a paint diluted in an oil making them tougher.
19 of 21
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture in which one substance is dispersed evenly in anothe substance.
20 of 21
What are thermochemical and phosphorescent paints?
Thermochromic paints change colour with temperature and phosphorescent pigment makes it glow in the dark.
