heatwave in week lead up (43degrees), lack of rainfall, 60mph winds, slow moving high pressure system over Tasman Sea, Human cause by pilots that fell and Arson in Kinglake, very hilly= faster spread

Primary impacts
173 deaths (kinglake), 414 injuries, 2030 homes destroyed and 1400+ structures and more damaged, river contamination, possum nearly extinct, 18000 livestock killed, 62000Ha land lost

Secondary impacts
psychological impacts - traumatised, medical support, loss of communications as mobile phone station destroyed and telephone exchanges, ash smoke went to Antarctica localised climate change= high levels of CO2 in atmosphere for months

short term responses
Salvation Army raised funds to help victims, federal government care package to each person hospitalised, evacuation, $1000 given to every adult to rebuild, 5000 firefighters

Longterm responses
improve land use planning regulations control urban development, reduce human error (arson), reduce fuel (vegetation), fire proof homes, less use of wood in structures
