What is endocrine system?
Collection of glands around body that regulate bodily functions, growth and psychological factors. Acts by releasing chemical messengers called hormones into bloodstream.

Pituitary gland location + explanation?
In brain and controls release of hormones from other glands known as master gland.
Hormone= ACTH- Adrenocorticotropic hormone

Hypothalamus location and explanation?
Next to pituitary gland in brain and links nervous system to endocrine system in combination with pituitary. Maintains homeostasis of bodily systems.
Hormone = CRH - corticotropin- releasing hormone

Pineal gland?
Modulates sleep pattern, keeping body to a day/night circadian rhythm.
Hormone= melatonin

Thyroid location and explanation?
Front of neck and modulates metabolism (rate of energy use in body)
Hormone= thyroxine

Thymus gland location and explanation?
In chest and stimulates development of T cells that work in the immune system helping with disease resistance, active until puberty.
Hormone= Thymosin

Pancreas location and explanation?
Top of stomach and regulated blood sugar levels, problems with this system leads to diabetes.
Hormone= insulin and glucagon

Adrenal glands location and explanation?
Top of each of kidneys and regulates biological effects of fight of flight response, increasing hr, blood supply to muscles and sweating ect.
Hormone= adrenaline and cortisol

Testicles and ovaries explanation?
Reproductive glands. Develops secondary sexual characteristics in both males and females, appearing at puberty.
Hormone = oestrogen in ovaries and testosterone in testicles
