What Are Pathogens and what are the 2 main types?
Microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease. The two types are bacteria and viruses.
1 of 8
What are Bacteria?
Bacteria are small cells reproduce inside you very quickly. They make you feel ill by releasing toxins and damaging cells.
2 of 8
What are Viruses? Are they living organisms?
Viruses are not cells and are very very small (smaller than Bacteria.) They are not living
3 of 8
How do Viruses reproduce?
They replicate themselves by invading your cells' and using their machinery to replicate themselves. The cell will then burst releasing the all the new viruses. The cell damage is what makes you feel ill.
4 of 8
What are parts of your immune system?
Your skin, hair and mucus in your respiratory tract stop a lot of nasty things getting inside your body. Platelets help blood clot quickly to seal wounds.
5 of 8
How does the immune system destroy bacteria/viruses?
White blood cells consume the foreign cells and digest them, the body produces antibodies and antitoxins which counteract the toxins produced by the invading bacteria.
6 of 8
What is vaccination?
Vaccinations include injecting the body with small amounts of dead/inactive/weakened version of a disease carrying antigens so your white blood cells then produce antibodies to attack them.
7 of 8
Do Vaccines Wear off?
Some vaccinations wear off over time so booster injections may need to increase levels of antibodies again.
