biology - biotechnology and large scale growth of microorganisms

?
What is a natural biomolecule?
Its a molecule made by a living organism.
1 of 10
What is biotechnology used for?
1.) providing useful substances, food; cheese, bread and chemicals such as insulin. 2.) provides services, eg; tests for chemical pollutants.
2 of 10
What conditions need to be controlled in a fermentor?
Agitation, nutrients intake, aseptic conditions, temperature, 02 levels, pH, water jacket (temperature) and removal of waste products.
3 of 10
How is the temperature monitored and controlled?
Temperature probes monitor the temperature, and a water jacket is used to cool it down if it needs to.
4 of 10
How is the 02 levels monitored and controlled?
Probes monitor the 02 levels and the gases are vented out, removing unwanted gases.
5 of 10
How is the agitation and nutrient intake regulated?
A motor is connected to a rod through the top of the machine, constantly moving the broth so no clumps gather at the bottom. The nutrients are added in the machine throughout the procedure.
6 of 10
Why do you need to control the pH levels?
if the broth is too acidic, it destroys the enzymes needed to create the biomolecule
7 of 10
How can you measure the growth of yeast?
measuring the rate that carbon dioxide is produced.
8 of 10
how do you control the pH level?
you add an alkali if it becomes too acidic.
9 of 10
Why do you need to keep the fermentor under aseptic conditions?
To prevent competition with an unwanted bacteria, which could reduce the amount of nutrients, 02 and overall conditions of your biomolecules.
