Biology- meiosis and mitosis

?
what is meiosis?
meiosis is a different kind of cell division. It is used to produce gamete(sperm or eggs) and these only contain 23 chromosomes not 46.
1 of 15
what is meiosis sometimes called?
it is sometimes called reduction division.
2 of 15
what happens at fertilisation to the egg and the egg?
at fertiliasation, the nuclei of the sperm and an egg join to form the zygote.
3 of 15
how many chromosomes does the zygote contain?
the zygote contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, 23 from the sperm and 23 from the ehh, thereby creating the correct number of 46 chromosomes for all body cells. It also means the zygote contains a complete set of chromosmes from each parent.
4 of 15
what is mitosis and meiosis?
mitosis and meiosis are two ways that cells reproduce.
5 of 15
what happens in mitosis?
mitosis is where a cell splits to create two identical copies of the original cell.
6 of 15
what happens in meiosis?
in meiosis cells split to form new cells with half the usual number of chromosomes, to produce gamete for sexual reproduction
7 of 15
what is DNA?
DNA is a very large molecule shaped like a twisted ladder. The shape is a double helix.
8 of 15
what makes up chromosomes?
Long strands od DNA make up chromosomes, these are found in the nucleus of a cell
9 of 15
what is mitois?
mitosis is a type of cell division
10 of 15
when does mitosis occur?
mitosis occurs wherever more cells are needed. It produces two new cells that are identical to eachother, and to the parent cell.
11 of 15
what is the process of growth called? ( in mitosis)
the process of growth and division is called the cell cycle
12 of 15
what does the cycle start at?
the cycle starts at the number of organelles- the different parts of the cell- increases.
13 of 15
why does the different parts of the cell increase?
because this ensures that each of the two new cells receives copies of all the organelles.
14 of 15
what happens before a cell divides?
the chromosomes are copied exactly. The DNA molecule is made of two strands. As each of the two strands seperate, new strands are made alongside each of them, thereby making two new copies.
