Biology Flashcards

?
What is the function of a NERVE CELL?
The function of a nerve cell is to carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another.
1 of 11
How are NERVE CELLS adapted to their function?
They are long to cover more distance and have branched connections art their ends to connect to other nerve cells and form a network throughout the body.
2 of 11
What is the function of a SPERM CELL?
The function of a sperm cell is to get the male DNA to the female DNA.
3 of 11
How are SPERM CELLS adapted to their function?
It has a long tail and a streamlined head to help it swim to the egg. There are a lot of mitochondria in the cell to provide the energy needed. It also carries enzymes in its head to digest through the egg cell membrane.
4 of 11
What is the function of a MUSCLE CELL?
The function of a muscle cell is to contract quickly.
5 of 11
How are MUSCLE CELLS adapted to their function?
They are long (so that they have space to contract) and contain lots of mitochondria to generate the energy needed for contraction.
6 of 11
What is the function of a ROOT HAIR CELL?
The function of root hairs is to collect water and mineral nutrients present in the soil and take this solution up through the roots to the rest of the plant.
7 of 11
How are ROOT HAIR CELLS adapted to their function?
They grow into long "hairs" that give the plant a big surface area for absorbing water and minerals.
8 of 11
What is the function of XYLEM AND PHLOEM cells?
Xylem and phloem cells form xylem and phloem tubes, which transport substances such as food and water around plants.
9 of 11
How are XYLEM AND PHLOEM cells adapted to their function?
To form tubes, the cells are long and joined end to end. Xylem cells are hollow in the centre and phloem cells have very few subcellular structures, so that substances can flow through them.
10 of 11
What is DIFFERENTIATION?
The process by which a cell changes to become specialised for its job.
