Biology Flashcards

?
Why do most living things need oxygen, other than breathing?
To release energy from food.
1 of 13
What types of animals take in oxygen through their external surfaces?
Small simple organisms that have moise permeable skin. e.g. earthworms and amoeba.
2 of 13
Larger, more complex animals have special organs for what?
For the exchange of gases. These organs include things like gills and lungs.
3 of 13
What do the intercostal muscles do in the human respitarory system?
When you inhale the intercostal muscles contract, expanding the ribcage. If you exhale the intercostal muscles relax, dropping the ribcage inwards and downwards.
4 of 13
What inspiration (Inhalation)?
Breathing in. An active process caused by muscular contraction, mainly of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
5 of 13
What Expiration (exhalation)?
Breathing out. A passive process caused by elastic recoil of the diaphragm and relaxation on intercostal muscles.
6 of 13
What are the four main conditions/diseases linked with the respiratory system?
Asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer.
7 of 13
What restrict amphibians and fish to their habitats?
The method of Gaseous change. Amphibians need moist habitats and fish gills only work in water.
8 of 13
Why do the methods of gaseous exchange restrict the habitats of amphibians and fish?
the permeable skin of amphibians makes them susceptible to excessive water loss. fish gills work by forcing water across the filaments.
9 of 13
What does tidal air mean?
The amount of air inhaled or exhaled in each respiratory cycle, during a normal, regular breathing
10 of 13
How are gaseous exchange surfaces adapted for gaseous exchange?
permeable, moist surface, large surface area, good blood supply and thin lining (one cell thick)).
11 of 13
What happens during an ashtma attack?
lining of airways becomes inflamed, fluid builds up in airways, muscles around bronchioles contract constricting airways.
12 of 13
Why is the respiratory system prone to diseases?
It can pick up lots of pollutants in the air.
