Biology basic components of living systems

?
Whats the formula to calculate magnification?
Size of image/ actual size of object
1 of 17
Why are cells stained before viewing under a light microscope?
Staining increases the contrast between different cell components making them visible.
2 of 17
What is an eyepiece graticule?
a glass disc that fits on top of the eyepiece lens that is marked with a fine scale from 1 to 100.
3 of 17
What is a stage micrometre?
A microscope slide with a very accurate scale in micrometres.
4 of 17
What is scientific drawing?
A labelled line drawing that is used to highlight particular features and doesn't include unnecessary detail or shading, it always has a title and a set magnification.
5 of 17
What is magnification?
How many times larger an image is than the actual size of the object being viewed.
6 of 17
What is resolution?
The ability to see individual objects as separate entities.
7 of 17
Function of a nucelus.
To control the metabolic activities of the cell as it contains genetic information in the form of DNA.
8 of 17
Function of mitochondria.
Site of production of ATP in the final stages of cellular respiration.
9 of 17
What are vesicles?
Membranous sacs that are used to transport materials in the cell.
10 of 17
What are lysosomes?
Specialised forms of vesicles with hydrolytic enzymes that break down waste materials in cells.
11 of 17
What's the role of cytoskeleton?
to control cell movement, movement of organelles within the cell, provides mechanical strength to the cell.
12 of 17
Three types of cytoskeletal filaments.
Microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate fibres.
13 of 17
Two types of extension that protrude from some cells.
Flagella and cilia.
(Whip-like protrusions) (Tail-like protrusions)
14 of 17
What is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
A network of membranes enclosing flattened sacs called cisternae.
15 of 17
What are the functions of the two types of ER?
Smooth ER- Lipid and carbohydrate synthesis and storage.
Rough ER- Synthesis and transport of proteins.
16 of 17
Function of Golgi apparatus?
Plays a part in modifying proteins and packaging them into vesicles.
