Biology B3 4.9 Sustainable food production.

HideShow resource information
How can fish stocks be maintained?
By controlling fishing quotas and net size.
1 of 18
What produces mycoprotein?
The fungus Fusarium.
2 of 18
In what conditions is mycoprotein produced?
Aerobic conditions.
3 of 18
What conditions does biogas need to be produced?
Anaerobic.
4 of 18
Why are food resources at risk of running out?
The human population is increasing rapidly.
5 of 18
What does sustainable food production involve?
Managing resources and finding new types of food such as mycoprotein, thus ensuring there is enough food for the current population and in the future.
6 of 18
How are fish stocks managed?
Fish stocks in the oceans are monitored and fishermen can only remove a strict allocation of fish per year (a quota) and must use certain size nets to avoid catching small, young fish.
7 of 18
What is the fungus Fusarium used for?
To produce mycoprotein.
8 of 18
Wat is mycoprotein?
A protein-rich food suitable for vegetarians.
9 of 18
How is Fusarium grown?
On cheap sugar syrup made from waste starch and the mycroprotein harvested.
10 of 18
How can microorganisms be grown on a large scale?
In industrial fermenters.
11 of 18
Why must the conditions in a fermenter be controlled?
To ensure maximum growth of the Fusarium.
12 of 18
What are industrial fermenters?
Large vessels which have an air supply providing oxygen for respiration, stirrers or gas bubbles, a water-cooled jacket around the outside and sensors to monitor both pH and temperature.
13 of 18
Why do industrial fermenters have stirrers or gas bubbles?
To keep the microorganisms spread out and to provide an even temperature.
14 of 18
Why do industrial fermenters have a water-cooled jacket around the outside?
Because the respiring microorganisms release energy which heats the contents.
15 of 18
Why can't fishermen remove small, young fish?
The population could become extinct if the young fish don't grow and reproduce.
16 of 18
What type of food is produced by Fusarium?
Mycoprotein.
