Biology B2 3.5 Making use of enzymes.

?
What do microorganisms produce that we can use?
Enzymes.
1 of 11
Where can enzymes be used?
In products in the home and in industry.
2 of 11
How do some microorganisms produce enzymes?
They pass out of their cells.
3 of 11
Enzymes from microorganisms have many uses in industry but what is their disadvantage?
They can be costly to produce.
4 of 11
What enzymes do biological detergents contain?
Proteases and lipases that digest food stains. They work at lower temperatures than ordinary washing powders. This saves energy and money spent on electricity.
5 of 11
What enzymes are used in some baby foods and why?
Proteases are used to pre-digest proteins in some baby foods.
6 of 11
What enzyme is used to convert glucose syrup into fructose syrup?
Isomerase. Fructose is much sweeter, so less is needed in foods. The foods, therefore, are not so fattening.
7 of 11
What are used to convert starch into sugar syrup for use in foods?
Carbohydrase.
8 of 11
What is an advantage of using enzymes in industry?
They can be used to bring about reactions at normal temperatures and pressures whereas traditional chemical processes require expensive equipment and a lot of energy to produce high temperatures and pressures.
9 of 11
Which enzyme is used to convert glucose into fructose?
Isomerase.
