Biology B1 Flashcards

?
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes an infection - like bacteria and viruses.
1 of 18
Do painkillers kill pathogens?
No - they relieve the symptoms from a disease.
2 of 18
How do white blood cells help defend against pathogens?
Produce antitoxins and antibodies which destroy batceria and viruses
3 of 18
What is an antibiotic?
A drug that kills bacteria.
4 of 18
What did Ignaz Semmelweis discover?
He reduced the number of deaths from diseases in his hospital by insisting that doctors should wash their hands before examining people
5 of 18
What does Bacteria and viruses produce?
Toxins that make us feel ill.
6 of 18
What is contained in a vaccine?
Dead or inactive pathogens.
7 of 18
Which organ system deals with infections?
The immune system.
8 of 18
Name the barriers that prevent microorganisms entering the body.
Digestive system (Acid in the stomach) and your skin
9 of 18
What does a phagocyte do?
Locates pathogen, engulfs it and then ingests it.
10 of 18
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment of an organism
11 of 18
What is the job of the peripheral nervous system?
The nerves take messages to and from the CNS.
12 of 18
What is the job of the sensory neurone?
Takes impulses from receptors into the CNS (Brain or Spinal cord)
13 of 18
What is the job of the relay neruone?
Connects sensory neurones to motor neurones (Spinal cord)
14 of 18
What is the job of the motor neurone?
Takes impulses from the CNS to a muscle (An effector)
15 of 18
Name the 5 sense organs and the receptors
Eyes = Light Ears = Sound Nose = Smell Tongue = Taste Skin = Sensitive to touch and pressurre
16 of 18
What is the CNS?
Its where all the infomation from the sense organs is sent. (Consists of the Brain and spinal cord)
17 of 18
What are receptors?
Group of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus.
