What is Selye's GAS?
Shows how the body adapts to stressors
1 of 17
What did Selye say about GAS?
The phsiological responses to stress were universal and general
2 of 17
What is the first stage of GAS?
Alarm stage
3 of 17
What is the alarm stage?
The stressors activate the hypothalamus which triggers the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) and the autonamic nervous system (ANS)
4 of 17
What does ANS cause?
Causes adrenaline production which leads to readiness for fight or flight responses
5 of 17
What are the phsiological reactions?
Increased heart and breathing rates and release sugars to generate energy
6 of 17
What happens for recovery?
The stressor disappears and the body returns to normal
7 of 17
What is the second stage of GAS?
Resistance stage
8 of 17
What is the resistance stage?
The body persists producing adrenaline and cortisol
9 of 17
How does the body adapt to the stressors?
The parasympothetic nervous system cuts in and the body appears to cope
10 of 17
What is the phsiological response to the resistance stage?
Raised blood pressure
11 of 17
How is the HPA axis involved?
The phsiological responses are governed as well as the raised blood pressure
12 of 17
What is the third stage of GAS?
Exhaustion stage
13 of 17
What is the exhaustion stage?
If the stressors persist and hormone levels stay high the body will not cope
14 of 17
What are the phsiological responses?
Damaged adrenal glands and weakened immune system
15 of 17
What happens because of the weakened immune system?
Defences to the stressors become less effective and illnesses occur, like heart disease and ulcers and the rats died
16 of 17
What does GAS suggest?
Suggests that stress is a biological response caused by changes in hormone levels
